ALEX KREW

Alex Krew found a passion for music when a string quartet visited his kindergarten. He immediately gravitated toward the largest instrument in the quartet and began his cello studies at the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore at age 5, studying with Bai-Chi Chen and Alison Wells. Alex continued his studies at Vanderbilt University on a full-tuition Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarship, studying with Felix Wang. In the spring of 2013, Alex spent a semester in Australia at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying with Julian Smiles. He returned to win Vanderbilt’s Concerto Competition, performing Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 with the Vanderbilt Symphony. Alex has attended numerous music festivals, including Yellow Barn, Aspen, Bowdoin, Brevard, and Music Masters Course Japan. Alex was a member of the Aurelius Quartet from 2013 to 2016, placing second in the 2015 MTNA National Chamber Music Competition and competing in the live round of the 2016 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition. In the spring of 2018, Alex received his Master of Music degree from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, studying with Eric Kim. Alex currently serves as principal cellist of the Jackson Symphony and substitutes regularly with the Nashville, Indianapolis, and New World Symphonies. When he’s not playing cello, Alex enjoys rock climbing, backpacking, and cooking.
